Caroline Batten

Doctoral Student

Caroline is a doctoral student completing a dissertation tentatively titled "'A Cure for the Harm of Another Poison': The Comparative Poetics of the Metrical Charms, their Analogues, and Other Old English Verse", in which She examines the metrical, stylistic, and poetic features of the Old English metrical charms in conversation with Norse, German, and Irish material, as well as other Old English poetry. 
Her broader research focuses on magic and the supernatural, gender, performative speech and emotional gestures, and poetics in Old English and Old Norse texts.
Caroline completed her undergraduate at Swarthmore College, and an MPhil in English Literature at Oxford in 2016.
